It’s been a long old wait but finally we have our first glimpse of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Smaug actually speaking! The latest trailer for Jackson’s latest epic Middle Earth outing is filled with much more action, foreboding and of course, dragon voices than anything we have seen thus far.
I love Ian McKellen’s delivery of “you’ll need it” in response to Bilbo finding his “courage”. That may be a weird first thought on the trailer but that was one of the few moments of pause in the whole thing. I’m hoping that means we’re in for a much more action packed Hobbit installment this time around. I must say that the whole thing feels a lot more akin to Lord of the Rings, which can only be a good thing.
And that voice. Smaug sounds somewhere between possessed Dana Barrett from Ghostbusters (“There is no Dana, only Zuul”), the Lamia from Drag Me to Hell and Megatron. It also sounds like Jackson and the team have perfectly cast and perfectly executed the kind of enormous, enunciated terror you would want from a gigantic fire breathing beast!
December just got even more exciting! Beat that Santa!
