First off let’s start with a horrendous statistic. People who were born the year the original Dumb and Dumber came out have been able to legally drink for two years! That’s right, it’s 20 years ago that Harry and Lloyd first took the long road to Aspen, to deliver a briefcase to Mary Swansen….Swinsen….Swim…Samsonite?
Whilst many may claim the time for a sequel has long since passed, the Farrelly brothers think otherwise, and so we’ll soon be watching another road trip featuring the two big hearted, dim witted friends. Only this time they’re out to find Harry’s estranged daughter!
There’s loads to like here. The idea of a 20 year wheelchair gag is brilliant, and the ‘reaching for diamonds’ and manual catheter removal moments are pure signature Farrelly humour. It’s a shame there seems to be a reliance on using old jokes (breath spray, point and laugh, “I like it a lot” etc). I get that mainstream audiences like a bit of familiarity with their comedy sequels, but given the 20 year gap I think they could have gotten away without needing to resort to gag recycling.
But more than anything it’s great to see Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels back in character, and looking strangely close to their younger selves.
