When Paul Thomas Anderson speaks, the world listens. At least that’s the world I’d like to think we live in. For the film fanatic community this is a day to stop everything and stand to attention, for today brings the first trailer for PTA’s Inherent Vice.
Only 3 days ago I re-watched Punch Drunk Love, a film that for me represents the very best of PTA. It matches up drama, comedy, farce, absurdism and art in a way that hits every single perfect note a film can hit. Ditto with Magnolia (although that veers slightly more on the dramatic side).
Now after a couple of films that felt generally melancholic or perhaps meditative (There Will Be Blood and The Master), both of which I must add are masterworks, Anderson has returned to his light-hearted side. And it is glorious!
There are a few Big Lebowski-esque moments (this is a good thing) but also plenty of signature obscure Anderson gags – that scene with Josh Brolin asking for pancakes…genius – and the fact that this is due out in time for Christmas makes me smile big!
