Over the last couple of years Director David Gordon Green’s output has been pretty incredible. He has managed to turn out Pineapple Express, Your Highness, The Sitter and Prince Avalanche, as well as directing numerous episodes of Eastbound and Down. With all that work you’d think he’d be hard pressed to put out anything else, but he has. His latest film, ‘Joe’, stars Nicolas Cage as a man looking for redemption in a backwoods American town. This redemption comes in the form of Gary (Tye Sheridan), a boy in need of a job and some personal help.
The first trailer has been released (it’s subtitles indicating it is yet to receive US distribution), and shows the film as gritty and intense, with a gripping central performance from Cage. It has been a while since we’ve had a genuinely effecting turn from Cage, i.e one that doesn’t generate comedy gifs and memes to the max! But it seems Gordon Green has tapped into the incomparable ferocity that Cage is best loved for.
