Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles – The first trailer

Well it’s finally here. This year will see the release of the first live action outing for the heroes in a half shell, in over 20 years! And today we’ve been given our first teaser trailer for the film, which is due out in August and will bear no resemblance to the image at the top of this page (sadly).

Featuring a narration from the always brilliant William Fichtner (who also plays the Shredder), the clip is a little light on actual turtle action. In fact based on the visuals of crumbling Manhattan satellite transmitters and the spiel about heroes not being “born but created” it’s very similar in look and tone to first Amazing Spiderman trailer. Let’s just hope the finished product isn’t as disappointing as that was. That’s right, keep your fingers crossed, even after seeing Michael Bay’s name on the producer credit, keep em crossed.

Here ya go dudes!

What’s most striking about this clip for me is just how big the turtles are. In this iteration, the brothers seem more like imposing monsters than family friendly fighters. Whilst I have always secretly hoped for a screen version of the TMNT that carries some genuine aggression and graphic violence, I hope this new look doesn’t totally alienate the next generation of potential turtle lovers. I know that if I was in April O’Neill’s shoes when Michelangelo lands next to her, I wouldn’t just faint, I’d also fill my pants!

Hopefully it won’t be too long until we get the full length trailer so we get a bit more of an understanding of character and turtle aesthetic. We’ll keep you posted as and when.

James is a movie obsessive with a particular love for scores and screenplays. He has written for numerous blogs, sites and cinemas and has been involved in several screenwriting projects. He can usually be found in front of a large plasma screen devouring Westerns, 80s pulp, Jimmy Stewart movies or anything by the Coens.
