The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Trailer

I read earlier in the week that the new Hobbit trailer would get first airing alongside The Man of Steel this weekend. Imagine my disappointment then at the fact that a) I’m going away this weekend and so would not get the chance to see either MoS or the Hobbit trailer until next week and b) I would have to read the smug/Smaug global trailer reactions on all the social media platforms.

Well thankfully the ever generous Mr Jackson has graced us with the full trailer online prior to the weekend, so that I, along with the rest of the world can ogle it at my own convenience many many times.

Without wanting to jump to conclusions, it would appear that Jackson is unleashing the action with this second chapter in the trilogy. The barrel scenes look frenetic, Beorn looks like an angry as hell bear and Legolas is so ready for a fight that his eyes are 100% bluer than they have ever been!

I love the scale on display here. The vistas look ever more expansive and those signature Jackson sweeping shots are as awe inducing as ever. That moment at the start as the characters scale a giant dwarf statue is particularly humbling. And then there is Smaug! Our first real glimpse of the dragon is impressive as you like. Sadly there is no hint at the Cumberbatch voice we are all waiting for, but to be honest I wasn’t even expecting we would see Smaug at this early stage so I’ll take what I can get!

What are your thoughts on the trailer? Are you enamoured and excited? Angry? Disappointed? Satisfied?

Get involved in the comments section below and let us know. Also will you be seeing Desolation of Smaug in 48fps or was the last experience enough to just stick comfortably with glorious 24fps 2D?

James is a movie obsessive with a particular love for scores and screenplays. He has written for numerous blogs, sites and cinemas and has been involved in several screenwriting projects. He can usually be found in front of a large plasma screen devouring Westerns, 80s pulp, Jimmy Stewart movies or anything by the Coens.
