The Leviathan – Incredible proof of concept

Oscar-nominated director Ruairí Robinson has teamed up with Jim Uhls (the screenwriter behind Fight Club) to create a sci-fi take on the old Moby Dick legend, set above the clouds, hunting gigantic white beasts with spaceships!

Yes the idea sounds like something an eight year old hyped up on too much sugar might conceive of, and yes that’s a good thing. What’s even better is that the team have put together a proof of concept trailer for the film, which is truly astonishing. The effects are on par with anything you’d see in a cinema and the direction is absolutely sublime.

We saw last year that the ‘leaked’ Deadpool proof of concept trailer wound up in that movie getting the green-light, and I assume that’s the driving force behind creating this great short film.

Here’s the official synopsis for the film:

By the early 22nd century mankind had colonized many worlds. Faster than light travel was made possible by harvesting exotic matter from the eggs of the largest species mankind has ever seen. Those that take part in the hunt are mostly involuntary labor.

I’m not entirely convinced yet that this would play out to a full length feature, but it’s great to see some original sci-fi out there with some real talent behind it.

James is a movie obsessive with a particular love for scores and screenplays. He has written for numerous blogs, sites and cinemas and has been involved in several screenwriting projects. He can usually be found in front of a large plasma screen devouring Westerns, 80s pulp, Jimmy Stewart movies or anything by the Coens.
